When coaching people on the long game, I help them to understand their patterns and ball flight, how to improve it if necessary and how to play freely with what they have. Knowing when and where to play certain shots, where to aim and what the real target is, becomes crucial to scoring. Most people have a good sense of how they hit the ball and if coached properly could save many strokes through strategy alone. This is where ability and a need to know come into play when learning advanced ball flights. Most elite amateurs, aspiring professionals and tour professionals will require the knowledge to play these shots. Most golfers will only ever need to know their pattern of movement, the flight of the ball it causes and why, then work with this flight for most of their golfing lives. The majority of golfers will not ever need to know how to execute these shots to play well. These shots are called the “9 Ball Flights” and include the following: Shot shaping is all about understanding how to move the ball in the air by applying different types of spin. As you progress your long game skills and technical ability, shot shaping becomes the next step to learn. Understanding the subtle changes in address and set up, the expectations of outcomes for each and the strategies involved in using them is important when learning the game. The long game can be separated into the following sections: This all may be done as part of a physical screening such as a TPI screen. This is why, in coaching, it is important to gain an understanding of a persons physical makeup including injuries, tightness, hip, knee, shoulder replacements, gym routines etc. The way a person moves, directly influences what the club does and subsequently influences the type of ball flight produced. Everyone’s swing is comprised of a motor pattern that can be partly natural and partly practiced depending on the coaching history. It is an important part of the game as it is the part that is used to get close to the green in as few strokes as possible. The long game is often the most practiced and technically taught part of golf. ![]()
